In March, 1988, during the Iraq-Iran War, Saddam Hussein ordered the chemical gassing of Halabja, a rural town in Kurdistan. About 4,000 people were killed and at least 7,000 injured. To this day, people living in the area of Halabja cope with birth defects believed to have been caused by the chemical warfare.

The mastermind of the attack, "Chemical Ali," remains in custody of Iraqi authorities.

Our guide lost his entire family in the attack and continues working to raise awareness about this incident.

"I don't care if anyone comes here and takes all our oil,” he says, “just no more death and destruction"
