The Capital Times
Dear Editor: Molly Ivins wrote in her last column “We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. … We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, ‘Stop it, now!’ “
Molly’s words touch my soul and inspire me to continue to do everything I can to end the war. Right now we are involved in a nationwide campaign called the Occupation Project, initiated by the Voices for Creative Nonviolence (vcnv.org).
This is a campaign to put pressure on members of Congress, through nonviolent civil disobedience, to vote “no” on the $99 billion in supplemental funding that President Bush is requesting to continue his illegal and immoral war in Iraq. We are telling members of Congress that if they want to support the troops, then they need to stop funding the war and get our young men and women home.
Rep. Tammy Baldwin has a strong record of voting against supplemental funding requests for the war. Though Sen. Russ Feingold says we need to use the power of the purse to end the war, we need him to commit to voting against the supplemental funding.
Citizens here who are involved in the Occupation Project are putting most of their energy toward Sen. Herb Kohl. We will hold a vigil at his Madison office, 14 W. Mifflin St., Suite 207, on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. for the next several weeks.
We are the deciders, and it is time to remind Congress of that fact and demand an end to the war. Please join us at Kohl’s office this Wednesday and every Wednesday leading up to the vote on funding.
Please call your senators and representative and ask them to vote “no” on supplemental funding for the war. We can make a difference. For more information, contact me at 222-7581.
