5th Congressional District of Alabama

(Across street from Garden Cove – entrance from parking lot.)
Huntsville, Alabama 35801

To Rep. Cramer and Staff,

The North Alabama Committee for Nonviolent Action (NACNVA) is proud to participate in the nationwide Occupation Project organized by the Chicago-based Voices for Creative Nonviolence (VCNV) (www.vcnv.org). The purpose of the Occupation Project campaign is to challenge Representatives and Senators to publicly declare that they will vote against any further funding for the war in and occupation of Iraq.

NACNVA urges Rep. Cramer to publicly state opposition to funding of the war in Iraq. As part of the North Alabama Occupation Project, individuals from throughout the Tennessee Valley plan to engage in nonviolent actions inside and outside of the 5th Congressional District office on February 5, 2007 at 4 pm. Members and friends of NACNVA will continue eight weeks of activities – February 12, 19 and 26 and March 5, 12, 19 and 26 - assuming your continued support for the war.

In the spirit of the teachings and lives of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mohandas Gandhi, the NACNVA will engage in a series of nonviolent actions at Rep. Bud Cramer’s office in Huntsville, Alabama culminating in possible civil disobedience to protest the war in Iraq. NACNVA will focus on Rep. Cramer because he has the power to vote to cut funding for the war through Congressional action.

Please refer to the expectation of commitment of participants to the VCNV Statement of Nonviolence Guidelines for Actions on its website. NACNVA fully supports these guidelines. We are in communication with the local Huntsville Police department concerning the North Alabama Occupation Project goals and actions. It is possible, as the Occupation Project progresses, individuals will make the decision to be arrested at your office to signify their opposition to and disagreement with your support of the war in Iraq. NACNVA will inform your office of those decisions in advance.

On February 5, 2007, Monday afternoon, two individuals will stand in your office in silence to initiate the beginning of the Occupation Project for North Alabama. The silence is in honor of Gandhi.

Thank you for your time and consideration. No War.

Sincerely,

Peter G. Engstrom, NACNVA Contact, Registered Voter
