From May 23 to June 12 Dan Pearson, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, took part in a Voices fact-finding delegation to war-torn Pakistan.
Dan, based in Chicago, has agreed to meet with local activists concerned about the Pakistan crisis. He and his fellow delegates (including Kathy Kelly) are particularly concerned about the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in U.S. strikes that have killed hundreds of Pakistani civilian citizens.
Dan interviewed a survivor of a drone attack and also spoke with numerous people displaced by the ongoing military offensive in the region.
His visit here is particularly timely: this coming November US Air Force pilots working at Syracuse’s Hancock Field will begin piloting Reaper drones for likely use in attacks against other countries. See Reaper Comes to Hancock for Post-Standard coverage on this.
Dan sees his visit as providing an opportunity for discussion about ways “to challenge local involvement in hosting the drones that are so costly to human life and that seem to expand Bush’s ‘war on terror.’”
