Thank you for visiting this mirror of our further resources page for the November 6-8 2018 “Voices Rising for Yemen” actions in New York City. Below please find a list of Suggested Further Actions for Yemen, followed by our hyperlinked Endorsers List. (Involving yourself with any of our participating groups is a further action on Yemen we’d very be very eager to suggest).
SUGGESTED FURTHER ACTIONS
Robert Naiman at www.justforeignpolicy.org has been doing sterling work building public campaigns around bills in Congress seeking to end or limit U.S. involvement in the Yemen war. Getting on his email alerts list is an excellent way to keep up to date with these campaigns.
News and opinion sites such as counterpunch.org, democracynow.org, theintercept.com and therealnews.com have carried exemplary coverage of the Yemen conflict. You may not feel that your local paper focuses enough on the Yemen war or on specific campaigns to end it, and letters to the editor can be a very powerful tool for educating your neighbors – a how-to-guide by our peace activist friend Ed Kinane may be worth reading here.
A weekly vigil in New York begins at 11am every Saturday in NYC’s Union Square – if you leave a message with VCNV at 773-878-1979/info@vcnv.org, we can have the organizers contact you.
Voices for Creative Nonviolence has assembled a page with protest materials designed for vigils focused on the August schoolbus attack. We’ve organized more than one consignment of forty child-sized blue backpacks – representing the UN-supplied backpacks of the more than forty children killed in the attack – which are making a path across the country for use in several planned vigils. Campaigns are underway in Columbia, MO (Fellowship of Reconciliation); Iowa City (Veterans for Peace), Milwaukee, WI, Wheeling, VA, and, in Chicago on November 30 (Chicago Area Peace Action – to be followed by a Loyola University presentation on the war by Shireen Adeimi).
Other events we’ve learned about include a relay 26-day fast Cindy Sheehan is undertaking at the end of the 26-day Yemen fast just completed by Pamela Bennett – information is here. Women Against War in Albany NY are tentatively planning a November 11th vigil.
And in Bellingham, WA, our friend Mary Mele is planning to honor the 14 million Yemenis in danger of death by famine with a “Women Fasting for the Children of Yemen” event – for fourteen hours on Nov 14, she will set up 14 chairs in front of her city’s Federal Building – women will be invited to sit in them for an hour, then fast for fourteen hours.
VCNV (773-878-1979, info@vcnv.org) is eager to help people connect with the above actions, or to start one of their own. Other groups demonstrably eager to help end the war in Yemen await your participation – find them in the Voices Raised for Yemen Endorsers list, below.
